In 3 hours I turn 21. I am celebrating with a screwdriver and a growing sense of dread at the impending adulthood.
Anyone who’s telling you that adulthood isn’t awesome is straight up lying to you.
Old Man Stone’s gonna break it down for you.
Adulthood is aces! You can literally do whatever you want. You wanna spend money on toys and gadgets, you tooootally can, and it’s awesome. You want to spend your Sunday eating breakfast for all three meals and marathoning cartoons. No one’s really going to stop you.
"But what about bills and having to earn money to pay for things?"
You pay for stuff and that stuff is completely yours. You actually get to take ownership of everything. You pay bills and you get to be responsible and in control of stuff. Agency is cool. Agency as an adult is better.
"But what about jobs and ‘other people’?"
You know how in high school, you were sort of just jammed together with four thousand-ish assholes that weren’t really in to stuff you were in to and maybe thought you were kinda weird? Adulthood is way better. Find
your passion anything that doesn’t bore you. Follow it to a career. Then you basically get to spend 8-9 hours every day with other people who dig what you’re doing and are awesome to be around.
"But what about having to be responsible?"
Honestly, you should be doing this anyway. Own yourself and your actions and the outcomes of combining the two. They won’t all be great all the time, but they’ll be yours, and sometimes you luck out and really cool shit happens.
And the best part is that it all gets better as you inch closer to the dark abyss. You become more resolved as a person. You become “you”. Sex gets better, relationships become more fulfilling and enriching, you get smarter, food tastes better, you *get* wine, you get much better friends, your tastes become more informed, even heartache and loss become experiences you can grow from.
Don’t knock adulthood just yet. I think you’ll dig it.
